Charlotte Moving Costs: Hourly Billing, Published Rates, and How to Compare Estimates

Last updated: August 2026. Public records fetched: 2026-08-26.

Charlotte local jobs of 50 miles or less bill hourly under North Carolina’s Maximum Rate Tariff No. 2 (effective January 1, 2026). Longer in-state jobs bill weight and distance. Those tariff numbers are ceilings, not what a given Charlotte company charges. The older “Moving 101” HTML page still says 35 miles; the live tariff is 50.

A move that crosses into Fort Mill or Rock Hill is interstate. NCUC maxima and the C-number do not price that route.

What actually changes the price

  • Crew and clock. Regular-time maxima: vehicle & 2 $188.40/hr; 3 $243.30; 4 $297.90; 5 $352.95. Clock starts at origin and ends at destination, plus up to one hour travel per 50 miles of the warehouse trips, rounded in 15-minute steps.
  • Uptown access. Medium/large commercial trucks may not sit on a public street inside I-277/I-77 from 7–9 a.m. or 4–6 p.m. weekdays without a permit ($100 citation). CDOT Right-of-Way Use Permits explicitly include moving vans; application and daily fees exist, but the overview page does not print the dollars. Park It meters: $1.50/hour.
  • Stairs, elevators, long carries, packing, bulky items, overtime, storage. Named in the tariff; building elevator and HOA fees are property-specific (no citywide schedule).
  • I-77 South / US-74 / South End rail work can stretch the clock. NCDOT states I-77 South travel times range from 10 minutes to nearly an hour depending on time of day.
  • NC–SC border. Charlotte → Fort Mill/Rock Hill uses federal estimate rules (including the 110% non-binding delivery-day cap), not MRT 2.0.

Worked ceiling, not a quote

Seven regular-time hours with three people, 50 miles or less: 7 × $243.30 = $1,703.10 maximum linehaul labor/vehicle before packing, bulky-article items, and valuation. Hornet’s 3-person $230/hr and the All My Sons 2BR average band both sit under that ceiling, as expected.

There is no Commission survey of “typical Charlotte” prices, and Moving Company HQ has no North Carolina cost page (404). Do not treat neighbor-state bands as Charlotte data.
